Environmental Studies and Sustainability

Learning Outcomes

The Environmental Studies and Sustainability Major at Merrimack College prepares students for careers focused on understanding and addressing complex environmental issues from a problem-solving, interdisciplinary perspective.   Students graduating from the program will be able to:

  • Reflect critically about their roles and identities as citizens and consumers and recognize that environmental problem-solving designed to improve environmental quality can begin at the local level with the individual.
  • Develop understanding that environmental quality is a complex whole that is impacted by ecological, economic, and political factors that are interconnected and interdependent.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in quantitative methods, qualitative analysis, critical thinking, and written and oral communication needed to perform as interdisciplinary scholars and/or practitioners.
  • Grasp and apply the fundamental principles in environmental studies from the life sciences, social sciences, business and the humanities as well as the interrelation between these principles.
  • Understand the meaning of, and the fundamental issues concerning, sustainability as it pertains to the ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in how to conduct literature reviews to obtain, critically assess, and organize information regarding environmental and sustainability topics in order to construct cogent arguments about issues and topics, policy and strategy in language appropriate to a particular field of study.
  • Demonstrate capacity to investigate, diagnose and propose solutions to environmental problems in complex multi-issue, multi-stakeholder milieus and create practical solutions to environmental issues through innovative practices as shown through capstone projects and successful completion of internships at relevant organizations.
