Tibetan Monks Mandala Construction

Sponsored by the Office of Student Involvement and Rogers Center for the Arts.  From the artistic traditions of Tantric Buddhism, millions of grains of sand are painstakingly laid into place on the flat platform over a period of days.  The lamas begin by drawing an outline of the mandala, then lay the colored sands by pouring it from traditional metal funnels called chak-pur.  Traditionally, most sand mandalas are destroyed shortly after their completion; this act is completed as a metaphor for the impermanence of life.

The creation of the mandala is a prelude to the performance “Mystical Arts of Tibet Sacred Music and Dance” on Friday, February 8 in the Rogers Center at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets available at the box office or by calling ext. 5355.
