What is Health Professions Advising?
Acceptance into professional medical schools takes planning, preparation, a high level of academic performance. Merrimack College’s Health Professions Advisor, Dr. Charlotte Berkes, is just the person to see if you are considering a professional career as a Medical Doctor (M.D.), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.), Dentist (D.M.D.) or Veterinarian (D.V.M.). Charlotte advises students interested in these careers on everything from course selection, graduate school application timelines, and all aspects of putting together the strongest possible application.
In addition, Dr. Berkes talks with students about what attracts them to a certain career, and the different successful pathways they can pursue to reach these goals. Dr. Berkes enjoys helping students explore their options because, “The physician is a familiar figure, but there are many other fantastic career options in the realm of healthcare that deserve serious consideration they include nursing, physician assistant, genetic counseling, pharmacy, and many other careers. Therefore, part of my job is to help students consider these options, and then make a wise decision about what is going to be right for them.”
Dr. Berkes urges students to “Get involved in outside-the-classroom endeavors as much as you can at Merrimack College, whether it’s research, internships, student leadership, or service. These experiences are invaluable in helping you to learn about what you enjoy and what strengths you can bring to the table as a potential future healthcare provider.”
