Robert Pinsky’s PoemJazz Comes to Merrimack

You love poems; you love jazz.  Each one offers pleasure through listening, reading and performing.  Only Robert Pinsky merges these two great passions into one and calls it…PoemJazz.

Poet Robert Pinsky (United States Poet Laureate 1997-2000) has devised a collaboration with jazz musicians Laurence Hobgood and Stan Strickland to present the human voice reading poetry accompanied by jazz improvisations.  PoemJazz will be presented on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in the Writers House at Merrimack College.

“In jazz, as in poetry,” says Robert Pinsky, “there is always that play between what’s regular and what’s wild.  That has always appealed to me.”

Pinsky believes the poetic voice in PoemJazz complements the music as if it were another instrument.

Pinsky is an American poet, essayist, literacy critic, translator, and professor in the graduate writing program at Boston University.  He has authored nineteen books, most of which are collections of his own poetry. His work in translating The Inferno of Dante Alighieri and The Separate Notebooks by Czeslaw Milosz has been critically acclaimed.

The Writers House opens its doors for all to enjoy this performance, as well as a long-list of other creative performances and lectures.
