Alternative Spring Break 2012

Merrimack students, faculty and staff travel to places near and far to volunteer and serve communities in need during this year's Alternative Spring Break.

During Spring Break 2012, instead of enjoying a week at home or on the beach, 41 Merrimack students and 10 Merrimack faculty and staff participated in Alternative Spring Break. ASB is a service opportunity where people from the Merrimack Community travel to different locations to volunteer and serve communities in need. This year there were five different locations: New Orleans, LA; Camden, NJ; Bronx, NY; Nassawadox, VA; Nazareth Farm, WV.

Alyssa Roder ‘12, ASB leader on the West Virginia trip, said “I think that ASB is an awesome experience and everyone should participate in a trip while they are at Merrimack. It is an eye opening experience that really makes you appreciate what you have. It’s also a great opportunity for you to meet different people within the Merrimack community.”

Katelyn DeCarlo ‘12, participant in the New Orleans trip said, “Going to New Orleans really opened my eyes to the impact that Hurricane Katrina had on the city and on the people of the city. But the good comes with the bad; the culture and the people there are so full of life and nothing like I had seen before. I have found a new passion for service because of this trip and I hope I can learn to live my life with simplicity and gratitude like the people there do. ASB NOLA will forever be in my heart.”
