Members of Merrimack’s Class of 2019 moved into the dorms Thursday ahead of Orientation then the start of classes next week

The campus was abuzz as members of the class of 2019 began to move in and attend orientation this week. Merrimack spent a busy summer upgrading its facilities and completing the first two residence halls at North Residential Village.

This fall the college enrolled more than 900 new students from its largest application pool ever, said Director of Undergraduate Admissions Darren Conine. That includes about 850 first-year students and 80 transfer students.

Overall, there will be close to 3,000 undergraduate students and 400 graduate students on campus this fall.

Merrimack is continuing to diversify with students from 32 states and 29 countries. It wasn’t long ago the college was drawing from just 24 states.

Merrimack’s strong academics remain on firm ground. The Honors Program for talented, highly motivated students has grown to a record number for this academic year, Conine said.

The honors program students are living at the new North Residential Village where the program is headquartered.

“That’s a great opportunity for them as they start in the brand new space this fall,” Conine said.

This is also the first semester for Merrimack’s new Pre-Master’s Program. The PMP provides international students an opportunity to acculturate and assimilate to American higher education as well as strengthen their English language abilities before they start their academic programs.

The PMP is a partnership between Merrimack and Study Group, said Tricia Pineda, director for planning and administrative enrollment and retention.

“This partnership is helping us further internationalize the Merrimack community,” Pineda said.

The recruiting work for next year’s freshman class is already beginning. Some members of Conine’s recruiting team are already on the road raising awareness and interest for next year’s freshman class.
