Fall Career Expo brought students and potential employers together

About 62 businesses and 110 of their representatives met with Merrimack students during the first-ever Fall Career Expo at the Sakowich Campus Center's MPR Oct. 7 so both sides could gauge potential matches for internships, coops and full-time jobs.

Philips Healthcare was the embodiment of employment opportunities for Merrimack students. The Andover-based company sent four alumni as representatives on the recruiting trip, including James Fay ’07, Stephen Mancuso ’01, Inger Arnott ’96 and Jennifer Ristuccia ’16.

The fall expo complements the larger spring job expo.

Students appeared well-prepared for their job hunts and teachers were letting them out of class or offering extra credit to attend, said Heather Maietta, the associate vice president of corporate and community engagement.

Tara Stuhr ’17, a marketing and finance major from Huntington Beach, Calif. was upbeat after visiting her first two booths.

She was introducing herself, shaking hands and giving out her resume. Stuhr said she’s looking for an internship for next summer.

“Both employers I’ve been to have been very positive and open to conversation without a lot of intense questioning,” she said before continuing her journey through the expo.

Philips representatives have visited Merrimack’s job expos in the springtime two or three times, Arnott said.

“To get our name out there and let people know we’re looking for the next crop of good employees,” Fay said.

The expo was open to all students though most attendees were expected to be juniors and seniors, said Amanda Brian, a program coordinator at the O’Brien Center for Student Success.

Tony Messina, a human relations expert working with the O’Brien Center, said he even saw a freshman attend to get experience at job hunting.
