“Social Justice Week is a grassroots initiative focused on bringing social-justice issues to campus,” said Luis Saenz De Viguera Erkiaga, chair of world languages and cultures and director of the social justice program. “Social justice is an ideal that we can work on a more fair and just society.”
The inclusive effort will show students and faculty how campus activism works and what kind of strategies people can follow, Saenz De Viguera Erkiaga said. Some of the events taking place during the week were planned independently of Social Justice Week but, are being rolled into the calendar because their subjects are relevant, he said.
“There are so many things connected to social justice, but Social Justice Week is the result of many people coming together,” he said. “Each group brings its own contacts and interests together to build up the awareness.”
The week kicks of with a lecture, “Naming (and Ending) Campus Sexual Violence,” by Associate Professor Susan Marine today at 2 p.m. in Cascia Hall.
