Volpe Athletic Center Expansion – Momentum @ Merrimack

Volpe Athletic Center Expansion

Continuing the Momentum

Expansion of the Volpe Athletic Center by approximately 83,000 square feet will allow the College to relocate and enhance the facilities that support the Athletic and Sports Medicine programs, while also relocating the campus bookstore and student health services in order to better serve student needs.

The addition of a second ice rink will position Merrimack College as a premier hockey center, allowing for teams at the youth, college and semi-pro level to compete at the highest levels. The expansion also includes enhanced spectator spaces such a new lobby, concession facilities, pro shop, and additional luxury boxes.

As an integral component of the College’s comprehensive enrollment growth strategy, the expansion will provide Merrimack College with the exciting opportunity to partner with – and have a beneficial impact on – our local community.

Community Partners

Community partners are an important component to the success of Merrimack College’s strategic vision to become a highly distinctive institution.

Merrimack College and the Islanders Hockey Club have a strong partnership, including a long-term agreement for Merrimack to be the home ice for the Islanders.  The partnership has recently grown with the development of the second ice rink included in the Volpe Expansion Project. This partnership reflects Merrimack’s commitment to community outreach and engagement, and illustrates how colleges can build world-class facilities and educational opportunities to benefit students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community as a whole.

As one of the premier development and competitive hockey programs in New England, the Islanders Hockey Club has more than 750 players competing in all 5 Premier New England Hockey Leagues – the Eastern Junior, Empire and ESHL Junior Hockey Leagues and the Eastern Hockey Federation (“EHF”) and the N.E. Women’s Hockey League. View More
