Merrimack College Receives Multi-year Grant to Support Excellence in Teaching and Learning

In support of its growing initiatives to enhance and promote teaching and learning, Merrimack College is pleased to announce it has received a $200,000 grant from the Davis Educational Foundation, a leader in higher education philanthropy across New England.  The multi-year funding will help launch the College’s new Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL), which seeks to engage faculty and the academic community in developing and implementing creative, effective, and innovative strategies that enhance student learning and support academic success.

A core initiative of the Provost’s Office, the CETL provides a critical infrastructure necessary to sustain and support innovation and excellence in teaching and learning across the disciplines and academic spectrum.  Moreover, through its mission of engaging the Merrimack community in developing and implementing creative and effective pedagogies that enhance student learning and support academic success, the CETL represents a strategic vehicle for achieving the transformational goals set forth in the Agenda for Distinction, Merrimack’s ten-year strategic plan.

The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning will offer programs, workshops, resources, and services designed to disseminate and investigate best practices and pedagogies within the Merrimack context.  Underlying these activities will be original research into best practices, with the CETL creating multiple research opportunities for those interested in defining and solving a teaching and learning challenge they face.

Merrimack College’s three-year, $200,000 was received from the Davis Educational Foundation established by Stanton and Elisabeth Davis after Mr. Davis’s retirement as chairman of Shaw’s Supermarkets, Inc.  The Davis Educational Foundation was founded with the mission of strengthening undergraduate programs of public and private colleges and universities in New England.  Specifically, their grant-making objectives focus on supporting the innovation and adoption of effective teaching and learning practices and improving the cost-efficiency of institutions.
