Dr. Josephine Modica-Napolitano

 

Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Dr. Modica-Napolitano earned the degree of Bachelor of Science in Biology, Magna Cum Laude, from the University of Massachusetts-Boston in 1981 and the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Biology from Tufts University in 1986.  Upon completion of her doctoral studies, Dr. Modica-Napolitano was appointed as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Pathology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, and later as a Senior Research Associate and Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at Tufts University.  She joined the Merrimack College community as an Associate Professor in Biology in 1995, and was promoted to the rank of Full Professor in 2004.  Dr. Modica-Napolitano served as Chair of the Department of Biology from 2006-2009, as the Founding Director of the Program in and Center for Biotechnology and Biomedical Sciences from 2007-2009, and as the Dean of the School of Science and Engineering at Merrimack College from 2009-2012. 

Dr. Modica-Napolitano was appointed to the position of Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs in January 2012. She has authored numerous research and review articles in peer reviewed scientific journals on mitochondrial dysfunction in human disease.  Her primary research focus is on identifying differences between the mitochondria of normal cells and cancer cells that can be used as site-specific targets for novel anti-cancer agents.
