Dr. Russell Mayer
Vice Provost for Academic Affairs
As Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, Dr. Russell Mayer supports the Provost’s efforts in promoting excellence in teaching and learning and creating a culture of assessment. He is responsible for oversight of Merrimack’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning and the College’s student academic support and success initiatives. He also leads the Provost’s Assessment Council and coordinates Merrimack’s accreditation reporting. Dr. Mayer is a member of the American Council of Education (ACE) Fellow’s Class of 2012-13. Established in 1965, the ACE Fellows program is America’s premier higher education leadership development program. It is designed to strengthen institutions and leadership in American higher education by identifying and preparing promising senior faculty and administrators for responsible positions in college and university administration.
Dr. Mayer is also an Associate Professor of Political Science and has taught at Merrimack since 1997. Before becoming Vice Provost, he served as Assistant Dean of Liberal Arts, Faculty Senate President and Department Chair. His scholarship focuses on civic engagement among young people. He is interested both in understanding the reasons why young people participate in politics and in promoting teaching pedagogies that foster greater civic engagement among students. His research also focuses on the methods of assessing the impact of these pedagogies, and he has published articles and book chapters that evaluate various approaches to promoting civic engagement. Dr. Mayer earned his undergraduate degree from Wesleyan University (CT) and his PhD from the University of Michigan.
