Writing Center Staff
Kathleen Shine Cain, Ph.D., Director
Kathleen has been involved in writing center work for over twenty-five years, and has served on the Executive Boards of the National Writing Centers Association and the Northeast Writing Centers Association. She has presented sessions at regional, national, and international writing center conferences, often accompanied by Merrimack peer tutors. She spent the 2005-2006 academic year in Belfast, Northern Ireland, helping to establish a Writing Centre at St. Mary’s University College. Also a Professor of Writing in the Department of Communication Arts and Sciences, Kathleen teaches Introduction to College Writing, Introduction to Composition Studies, Private and Public Writing from the Civil War Era, Writing the Personal Memoir, and Writing for Social Change. Her research interests include international/intercultural communication among writing programs and writing centers, social justice pedagogies, and memoir.
Erin Pastore, Ph.D., Interim Associate Director
Erin Pastore holds a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction in English from UMASS, Lowell and a Ph.D. in Writing from Old Dominion University, located in Norfolk, VA. While at Old Dominion, she worked as the Assistant to the Director of the Writing Center, dividing her time between tutoring undergraduate and graduate students and mentoring the tutoring staff. Erin has presented at several local and national writing conferences, including the Conference on College Composition and Communication and the Conference on Computers and Writing. Erin’s research agenda is pedagogically focused with an emphasis on helping writing students, tutors, and instructors work together to create meaningful learning opportunities through writing.
Rachel Silsbee, Graduate Fellow
Rachel recently graduated from Southern New Hampshire University with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and a minor in sociology. She is part of the Merrimack College Master of Education in Higher Education Degree program. During her time at Merrimack, Rachel will serve as the Graduate Fellow in the Writing Center.
