Dominique Bilato came to America from Italy through an exchange program her senior year of high school. Now, as a multilingual student at Merrimack – she speaks Italian, French, and English - and helps her fellow students realize the importance of languages.
“I want to transmit my love for languages to others,” said Dominique. “I want people to like languages, not just take them (as classes) because they have to.”
Dominique tutors students in modern languages - sometimes she even goes to lunch with the students she is tutoring and converses with them in Italian or French, just so they can go beyond the grammar alone, and actually pick up casual talk.
Currently, Dominique is treasurer of the French Club and plans French movie nights, trips to Montreal, and other monthly activities. A member of the Italian Club, she has found herself cooking native Italian cuisine with her fellow club members.
As an international student, Dominique is making the most of her experience in the United States. “My dream was to come to an American university, and when I visited Merrimack, I fell in love with the campus. I convinced my parents to let me come overseas and I don’t regret one moment of it. I love this community - it makes me feel at home.”
