Building Community, Reaching for Justice

Sponsored by the Community Engagement Graduate Program at Merrimack College

This speaker series provides opportunities for experts in community engagement and related fields to discuss critical issues with students and the greater community, one Wednesday a month.  

All events are 4:30pm-6:00pm in Casica Hall unless otherwise noted.  Events are free and open to the public.

  • 4:30pm - 6:00pm: Building Community, Reaching for Justice Speaker Series: Linda Wertheimer
    Linda Wertheimer, MS, Journalist and author of Faith Ed: Teaching about Religion in an Age of Intolerance

    Teaching Children about Religion in an Age of Intolerance: 
    Ms. Wertheimer will discuss religion education in schools. She will share stories of children who have been bullied because of their faith, schools that have been challenged for teaching about world religions, and explain why students need to learn about the faiths and beliefs that are different from their own.

  • 4:30pm - 6:00pm: Building Community, Reaching for Justice Speaker Series: Lorna Rivera, Ph.D.
    Lorna Rivera, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Women’s Studies and Director of Latino Studies Program in the College of Liberal Arts at UMASS Boston

    Nativist Ideologies and Resistance in Latino Communities:
    Dr. Rivera will discuss the politics of nativism, cultural difference, and pluralism in the United States.  Rivera will discuss research about hate crimes and discriminatory policies against Latino  immigrants, and examine what is at stake for Latino communities in the next U.S. presidential election and beyond.
