FAA3650 The World of Michelangelo, Dr. Ellen Longsworth

The World of Michelangelo deals with the life, art, and times of Michelangelo: the history of the popes whom Michelangelo served; with Michelangelo’s own history—the man, the artist and Christian, who in his life sought, but was unable, to stand apart from the conflicts of his epoch. Through his sculpture, painting and architecture, drawing and poetry he gave expression to these conflicts with a scope and depth equaled by none of his contemporaries. Few were able to escape the power and reach of his influence, his age seeing itself through the images that he created for it. This course can be used to fulfill 1 of the following areas:

  • Major or Minor credit in Visual & Performing Arts
  • Italian Culture
  • Arts and Literature
  • Open Elective Credit

MEN3080 Roman Engineering, Dr. John Gallagher

Many of the engineering and technological advancements of Ancient Rome influence modern engineering design and analysis. In MEN3080 Roman Engineering, we will explore how ancient Roman structures and engineering achievements still shape local culture and explore how modern engineering utilizes many of the same principles and applications in construction and machine design. This course is designed for all majors and emphasis will be placed upon physical behavior and application rather than math, physics, and the derivation of theoretical behavior. For non-engineering students, this course offers an introduction to modern engineering, technology and analysis through study of ancient engineering achievements, many
of which they may already be familiar with through Greek and Roman history and mythology. For engineering students. this course will provide practical experience and knowledge of the history behind many of the techniques and designs they will use in their profession. This course can be used to fulfill 1 of the following areas:

  • STEM (approval pending)
  • Major or Minor in Mechanical Engineering (Technical Elective)
  • Open Elective Credit
