Heidi Wroblicky

Class of 2011
History and English Major

How does an Orange County high school student end up in North Andover, Massachusetts?  Through volleyball, in Heidi's case.  She happened to be playing in a volleyball tournament attended by Merrimack's volleyball coach and he recruited her.  Heidi, who enjoys playing defense, started on Merrimack's volleyball team freshman year.  The team made it into the final Northeast Ten Conference tournament both her freshman and sophomore year.

Because she loves to read social history and literature, Heidi has chosen a double major in English and History.  “All of my Merrimack professors are great,” she says.  In particular, she appreciates the willingness of her professors to bring history to life by introducing students to ancient artifacts, coins and artwork, either bringing these objects into class or taking students to area museums.

“I guess you could call it a hands-on, visual way of teaching history,” explains Heidi.  “The professors are enthusiastic and knowledgeable, and that makes it easier to learn.”  Having small classes helps, too.  “You can get to know your professors at Merrimack, because they always make time for you.”

Although she's in training year-round for the volleyball team, Heidi has also started playing intramural ice hockey at Merrimack.  “I always wanted to play ice hockey,” she says.  “I loved playing street hockey with kids in my neighborhood growing up in California, and ice skating is similar enough to roller blading that I was able to pick it up pretty easily.  I'm not very good yet, but it's still really fun.”

When she's not in class, on the ice or in the gym, Heidi is tutoring students in Merrimack's writing center and having fun with the College's Italian Club, “even though I'm more of a French person,” she acknowledges with a laugh. “I hope to study abroad in France next year.  One of the greatest things about Merrimack is that they offer so many things for you to try.”
