Class of 2008
In preparation for her life and career, Shannon Donahue, Spanish major graduate, would do anything to master the Spanish language – and she did. Shannon spent the semester abroad in Barcelona, Spain.
“As a Spanish major, the best way to test my language skills, to encounter the culture, and to appreciate the overall experience, was to spend five-months in Spain,” said Shannon. She arranged her study abroad experience through Merrimack’s Office of International Programs.
Shannon thought she knew Spanish, but once she got off the plane in Barcelona she realized that wasn’t the case. “Going overseas expedites learning a language. I was dreaming in Spanish by the time I left Barcelona.”
Spain was Shannon’s first European experience and she was happily surprised by the independence she gained and the number of friends she made overseas. “I learned more that semester abroad about myself and about the world than ever before. It was the best decision I ever made.”
Shannon is interested in becoming a psychiatric counselor and will use her Spanish language skills to help those who don’t have English as a first language. She will also continue traveling, maybe doing some service work in Central or South America.
