Concentrations

The Biology Department offers three concentrations for students pursuing specific interests in Biology as well as the option to create a customized concentration.

imageConcentration in Cell and Molecular Biology and Biotechnology

Cellular and molecular biology, biotechnology, and biomedical science together drive the modern life sciences deeper into the 21st century. Students in the Department of Biology at Merrimack, prepare for their careers by both engaging in and accomplishing cellular and molecular biology, biotechnology and biomedical science. Students in this concentration, aw well as in other concentrations, have unique opportunities to work with and in the Center for Biotechnology and Biomedical Sciences.

Concentration in Integrative Biology, Including imagePre-Med, Pre-Vet, and Pre-Dental

In this concentration, students receive counseling early in their careers to prepare for the rigorous application process to professional schools (medical, dental, veterinary, etc.) after graduation. Merrimack’s Health Professions Advisor meets with students early in their freshman year to help choose a program and inform students of important application time tables.  Course preparation guidelines can be found by clicking here.

Concentration in Ecology and Behavioral Biologyimage

Merrimack College’s geographic location gives students access to diverse off-campus sites that represent the terrestrial, freshwater, estuarine and marine habitats in New England.  Our ‘environmental geography’ places our students in the middle of a real-world laboratory where students and faculty can engage in real-world environmental research and problem solving. This concentration offers a robust core in biology and a focus on the ecological, behavioral and evolutionary spectrum of biological inquiry with course in Conservation and Restoration Biology, Marine Biology, Behavior and Evolution. The concentration is truly interdisciplinary and integrates concepts and knowledge across the spectrum of biology as well as connections with other basic sciences.  In addition, our students have exciting opportunities to explore the emerging field of Sustainability by taking targeted courses with an environmental and sustainability focus in the social sciences, humanities and business through the College’s interdisciplinary Environmental Studies and Sustainability Major

Customized Concentration

The customized concentration option includes a minimum of any five (5) upper level courses woven together in consultation with your advisor.
