Mathematics Experiential Learning
“Tutoring has me thinking on my feet,” said Becca Webb ’12, a math and education major who wants to be a middle school math teacher.
“Tutoring isn’t necessarily about getting the right answer,” Webb said. “It’s about understanding the process and being able to explain and replicate it in the proper situations.”
She’s also an officer in the Mathematics Club, a site coordinator for the Lawrence Math and Science Partnership through Merrimack’s Stevens Learning Center and will teach math at North Andover Middle School in spring semester.
“One of the best ways to learn mathematics is to explain it to someone else,” said math professor Laura Hall-Seelig. “The Math Center tutors do this every day. They crystallize the ideas in their own minds and then synthesize that understanding into an explanation that makes sense to others.”
For Amanda DeMarco ’12, “It is very rewarding to be a Math Center tutor. Not only are you helping your peers on campus, but oftentimes tutoring helps to brush up on your own math skills.”
A math and business major, she plans on a career in finance. DeMarco also is captain of the Dance Team, head of recruitment for the Relay for Life Committee, a tutor at the Writing Center and a Peer Mentor of the Sakowich Center for Student Success.
The Math Center, in McQuade Library, is open 37 hours a week.
Recently a group of Merrimack students presented their research at the Northeast Undergraduate Research and Development symposium.
