Career Passport

The Career Passport is an innovative program offered by the O’Brien Center for Student Success. For Spring 2013, students in all sections of Essentials of Business Analysis (BUS1100W) and Intro to College Writing (WRT1050) are participating in the program.

  • Step 1: Complete at least 5 activities within these pages. Three are required, two are your choice:
    • A résumé creation & critique
    • Majors/Minors Fair—February 6
    • Co-Op/Internship Panel — February 11
    • Your Choice
    • Your Choice
  • Step 2: Bring this Passport with you to each event to receive your participation stamp.
  • Step 3: Present your Passport to the O’Brien Center for Student Success to receive academic credit.
    • By Wednesday, May 1 at 5:00pm


All ten activities are listed below, including instructions on how to access Focus, Going Global, InterviewStream, and Vault.

Required: Resume Critique

Resume Creation and Review  |  Anytime during resume critique walk-in hours

This is a required passport activity.
A professional resume is the first step in building your brand.

Step 1— An in-class resume workshop will take place on a date specified by your professor
Step 2 — Create/revise your resume and have it reviewed by the O’Brien Center by the Friday following your presentation. For example if your resume workshop was on Wednesday, February 20th, your resume must be critiqued by Friday, March 1 at 5:00pm.

Resume critique walk in hours are:

  • M 1:00-3:00 pm
  • T 1:00-3:00 pm
  • W 10:00am – 12:00 pm
  • TH 2:00-4:00 pm
  • F 12:00-2:00pm

Once completed, get your stamp at the O’Brien Center for Student Success.

Required: Majors/Minors Fair

Wednesday, February 6  |  3:00 – 5:00 pm  |  Multipurpose Room (MPR), Sakowich Center

This is a required passport event.

Your academic journey begins with a program of study. Each student may take a different path on this journey through a combination of majors and/or minor(s). Visit this event to map out your personal journey by speaking with departmental advisors, faculty members, and even students from each major and minor. Already have a major? Explore career paths associated with the major you’ve chosen or look at options for adding a minor!

Required: Co-ops and Internships with Dr. Phil Gardner

Monday, March 11  |  4:00 – 5:00 pm  |  Rogers Center 

This is a required passport event.

Join Dr. Phil Gardner, Director of the Collegiate Employment Research Institute at Michigan State University to learn the benefits of co-ops and internships. Learn how to get started on your search for these types of experiential learning opportunities, and how the O’Brien Center can help!

Federal Employment: Jumpstart Your Career with the Red, White & Blue!

Thursday, February 14  |  4:00 – 5:00 pm  |  Cascia Hall

Join Kimberly Ainsworth as she discusses career opportunities with the federal government. Approximately 50,000 students are employed each year by the federal government. Ms. Ainsworth assumed the position of Executive Director of the Greater Boston Federal Executive Board in 1998.

Event: Global Village

Thursday, February 21  |  4:30 – 5:30 pm  |  First Floor Lounge, Sakowich Campus Center

Global Village is a great opportunity to learn about and celebrate the many cultures and nationalities of Merrimack College.  Cultural competencies and diversity appreciation are essential for students aspiring to work in any profession. Exposure to these types of events provide an introduction to cultural differences.

Business attire is required!

Come meet and mingle with companies interested in hiring full time, part time, co-ops and interns.  Last year, over 100 employers attended, representing many of the majors offered at Merrimack. All classes and majors are welcome.

  • Step 3 — Stop by the O’Brien Center to receive your stamp

  • Step 1 —  Visit www.merrimack.edu/passport, click on FOCUS
  • Step 2 — Complete the series of assessments on your personality, values, interests, skills, and abilities. All five need to be completed.
  • Step 3 —  Schedule a meeting with a career advisor to review your results and discuss next steps in the career exploration process.

Activity: Going Global

  • Step 2 — Navigate Going Global, choose a country or city to research and get expert advice about employment trends, job search resources, resume guidelines, cultural/interviewing tips, networking groups and more.
  • Step 3 — Complete the survey.
  • Step 4 — Bring a copy of the e-mail confirmation to the O’Brien Center to receive your stamp.

Activity: Vault

  • Step 2 — Navigate Vault, a comprehensive career resource featuring industry news, exclusive insider information on more than 5000 companies, salary information, career advice articles and message boards.
