Service is a primary focus for Jacob Symmes ’25, who has embarked on many mission trips since he was young. Now preparing to lead his third SEND Trip, Jacob is reflecting on his time as a Warrior so far.
In addition to the SEND program, Jacob found a community within campus ministry and built connections with those around him. As a human development and services major, he was able to grow professionally through an internship with the New England Center for Children working with young adults with high-needs social or intellectual disabilities. Throughout it all, Jacob learned Merrimack was the perfect fit for him, which is why he plans on becoming a Double Warrior by enrolling in the school counseling master’s program.

"I love being able to make pastries and edible sculptures at Merrimack because it gives me an outlet for my creativity. I can take an idea that the College community has and bring it into one focus with a little bit of my personality and creativity mixed in.
After the pandemic, I started going to school as a radiology tech, but someone from Merrimack called with a position available similar to past culinary roles I held. When I finally folded creativity with a career, it took off. It`s a labor of love, but to me, it`s like performing on stage. The response and look on people`s faces when they realize it`s food is what makes it all worth it."

“The Steel Bridge Competition is an avenue for engineering students to learn the technical habits engineers need. I’ve had the privilege of working on these skills with future engineers spanning across disciplines and class years. Along with ASCE, the steel bridge team has given me countless opportunities to grow as an engineer here at Merrimack. Learning to weld in our shop alongside my fellow teammates was my favorite activity we did this semester. I recommend the steel bridge team to every student I meet at the engineering and computational sciences building, where a lot of us study together. The program has a lot of room to grow and I am excited to have a leadership role in it!”
