Pat McAvoy ’18
What is your current job and what do you like about that position?
I currently work for the New England Sports Network as a member of the digital team as the Digital Video Sponsorship Coordinator. My job revolves around everything from writing and publishing articles about Boston sports, to posting Boston Bruins/Red Sox highlights on NESN’s social media platforms and co-hosting a podcast on college hockey with a focus on New England-based squads.
“Working at The Beacon and WMCK taught me the important writing and editing skills I need every day to do my job and helped get my foot in the door in the sports industry as a whole.”
How did your Merrimack experiences (coursework, internships, research with faculty, student club leadership, etc.) prepare you for that work?
I wouldn’t be in the situation I’m in now without Merrimack College and all of the faculty that helped me along my way. My coursework in the Communication department helped me hone my journalism skills and put together a portfolio and cohesively pitch myself to employers. Working at The Beacon and WMCK taught me the important writing and editing skills I need every day to do my job and helped get my foot in the door in the sports industry as a whole. My radio show on WMCK led to my first internship during my freshman year with the Lowell Spinners and I stayed there all throughout college then a directed study in the Sports Management department helped pave the way to my initial meeting with NESN, which then eventually led to an internship and full-time job. Without my time at Merrimack College, I don’t know where I would be.
Do you have any particularly fond memories of Merrimack to share?
There are too many to count but every day I spent on the lime green floor of the Communication department was a good one. From putting together The Beacon’s layout in the Mac Lab, to hanging around in the WMCK studio there was always something going on and I wouldn’t change a thing.
