Core Required Courses (20 credits):

Exploring Leadership Frameworks and Strategies (4 credits)

Leaders in the current business environment face highly dynamic situations and numerous disruptive forces. To be an effective leader in this environment, you must challenge assumptions, and develop innovative solutions to problems. In this course, students will be exposed to both leadership theory and practice, will use research in emotional intelligence as a framework to be better decision makers, and will gain valuable insights into their own personal leadership style, and how to collaborate with internal and external constituents in a manner that benefits all stakeholders.

MGT5340: Negotiations and Conflict Resolution (2 credits)

This course offers coverage of negotiation and conflict-resolution in organizational settings. Students will study the theory and research on effective negotiating strategies to build their understanding of, and skills for, managing differences and negotiating in different situations. The course considers, among other topics, individual negotiations, negotiations in teams, negotiations across national and cultural differences, over race and gender differences, and between organizations. Students will also consider conflict handling styles and response alternatives along with various modes of resolution. In particular, students will be exposed to techniques for facilitating difficult conversations in hopes of resolving conflict and bringing out the best of people in organizations.

MGT5350: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (2 credits)

This course explores a variety of topics relevant to diversity in organizations; students will learn cultural and psychological processes that influence the manner in which people deal with one another. Students will apply them to discussions of specific dimensions of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, and physical and mental ability. Students will also learn ways in which organizations can and do manage diversity toward the development of inclusive workplaces.

Healthcare Law, Ethics, and Policy (4 credits)

This course is a review of the laws, ethics, and policies that affect healthcare decisions, relationships among professionals and patients, and the management aspects of healthcare delivery. It provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize legal and ethical issues that arise in healthcare practice, to be prepared to evaluate situations that may have legal or ethical implications, to know when to seek legal or ethics committee counsel, and to understand the implications of healthcare law and policies on their own decision making. Students will have a working knowledge of pertinent law ethical procedures, and policies, and how to apply them in healthcare settings.

Communication and Management in Healthcare (4 credits)

This course will provide students with theories and tools to enhance their written and verbal communication skills. It also provides students with an overview of the skills and concepts required to be a manager within healthcare. General basic functions of management, as well as specific issues of healthcare. The course will also provide the student with a basic understanding of the impact of the human resources department including challenges, education, safety, compensation, and employee issues.

Innovative Leadership in Healthcare (4 credits)

In this course, students will learn what innovation is and how it can affect leadership within the healthcare industry. The traits of effective leaders, how to encourage creativity within the healthcare setting, and how to apply these methods while approaching industry-specific issues are reviewed.

Elective Course Options (12 credits):

Healthcare Financial Management (4 credits)

This course is a comprehensive examination of the theoretical and practical approaches to financial management within the healthcare industry. Analyzing, planning, controlling investment, and financing are examined. Topics include the financial environment, how funds flow within healthcare, risk and rates of return, capital budgeting techniques, analysis of financial statements, financial planning and control, and ethics in finance.

Quality Improvement and Accreditation in Healthcare (4 credits)

This course provides an overview of basic quality improvement methods, applications, and approaches utilized in health care which will assist the student. It also reviews accreditation agencies and their impact on policy and operations within healthcare settings. As healthcare agencies continue to evolve they must incorporate methods to ensure that risk is mitigated, quality of care is secured and patient satisfaction fostered. This course will review assessment techniques, methodologies utilized in quality/process improvement, accreditation standards, and quality improvement organizations.

Health Information Technology (4 credits)

This course examines how health information technology impacts healthcare delivery in all settings. This course explores past and current-day practices as well as envisioning future effects. The advantages, challenges, laws, and regulations related to information systems, how information systems impact healthcare, and emerging technologies are explored. The current healthcare landscape will be investigated to determine how healthcare informatics impacts quality outcome measures and reimbursement practices and regulations.

Compliance and Risk Management in Healthcare (4 credits)

This course includes a study of the key areas of compliance and risk for healthcare organizations in general. Compliance is an essential element of any healthcare organization. This course will prepare the student to understand the components of an effective compliance plan, the role of a compliance officer, specific legislation regarding compliance in healthcare, and the audit process, and enable the student to author policies and procedures.

Managing Corporate Team Performance (4 credits)

This course provides students with the tools to initiate and maintain processes to maximize their professional performance. Methods to establish performance and productivity goals, how to establish and implement performance-based practices, and how to remove barriers to employee performance will be covered.

Developing and Implementing a Strategic Plan (4 credits)

This course provides an overview of the required elements of the development and implementation of a corporate strategic plan. How strategic plans impact employees, and tools and techniques utilized in each section of the planning, implementation, and evaluation process will be covered.

Principles of Cybersecurity in Healthcare (2 credits)

Breaches of IT within the healthcare industry pose a perpetual risk to patient privacy and safety, as well as the organizations delivering care. This course provides students with a review of how they can protect patients, providers, and organizations. Requirements of HIPAA, ARRA, and HITECH Acts are reviewed, as well as the development of policies, procedures, and security plans.

Competitive Advantage in Healthcare (2 credits)

Healthcare is a continually evolving and competitive environment. This course reviews what exactly a competitive advantage is, how it affects other agents, what influences it, and how it is maintained. How leadership affects competitive advantage, when it should alter the strategic plan, and what practices enhance it.
