Thank you for your interest in attending the JOY: A Path for Teacher & Student Well-Being workshop on Tuesday, January 28, 2025 from 4:30-5:30 PM EST via the Zoom platform. All workshops in this series will be fully on Zoom. This workshop will be facilitated by Margaret Carr. This first workshop is part one of a five-part series.

Series Content: Come get your monthly dose of JOY this school year by participating in this workshop to learn about Finnish strategies to prioritize joy in teaching and learning.  Research indicates that experiencing joy will promote teacher and student well-being and build resiliency in the profession.  Given the current climate of education brimming with stress, teachers everywhere would benefit from using simple, straightforward approaches to incorporate joy into their teaching.  Research suggests that students are more engaged in learning, and behaviors including those associated with ADHD and ADD have the potential to be significantly reduced in the classroom.  It is time to consider teacher and student needs for well-being.  Finnish children top the charts year after year on international measures of academic achievement and on measures of happiness and well-being.  In this workshop, you will discover ways to integrate Finnish strategies for joy into your own classroom practice.  All children deserve to experience joy when learning.  All teachers deserve to experience joy when teaching.  Teaching in American schools is a profession fraught with challenges, stress, and difficulties.  Let joy be your guide for well-being and let joy be your path to resiliency.

Presenter Biography: Margaret Carr is currently a kindergarten teacher at Crim Elementary in Bowling Green, Ohio.  She has 20 years of diverse teaching experience spanning 6 rural, suburban, and urban public schools in Massachusetts and Ohio.  She has developed and taught courses and workshops for Idioma consulting and Merrimack College.  Margaret has taught kindergarten, art, music, reading, and ESL.  She has earned National Board Teacher Certification and is presently a Fundations facilitator for her school district.  She received a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from Kent State University, a Master of Education in Educational Administration from Ashland University, and her Doctorate in Leadership Studies from Bowling Green State University.  She was the recipient of the Sontag prize in urban education, Voya Unsung Heroes Award, numerous grants including an NEA Achievement grant, and was the winner of the 3MT competition for Bowling Green State University.  She is very passionate about research, and her dissertation is titled “Leading the Heist to Restore American Childhood and Teacher Autonomy Through Finnish Principles of Joyful Leading, Teaching, and Learning.”  She is a wife and a mother to four amazing and very active children.  She loves animals, being part of 4-H, hockey, and spending time with her family at their cottage in Canada.
